Foraging in the Weeks of Want

Get out of the scarcity mindset!

Before supermarkets, there was the gap in the Spring between when your stored food ran low or ran out and when you would have your first spring crop of greens. This period was called the “Weeks of Want”.

For the people who were in tune with the land and the seasons it wasn’t a time of want – it just required a different level of effort to get the food. People would forage nettles, fiddle head ferns, ramps, mushrooms.

I already have narrow leaf plantain, wild garlic chives, and green walking onions coming up. Plus mustard greens and arugula that somehow made it through the Winter. Soon the asparagus will be poking up.

One year ago today, I took a video of the forageables coming up.

Foraging Nettles

About a month from now I will be wading out into the nettle patch with thick pants, boots, and gloves on to harvest nettles and freeze them for the Winter
